BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced today that the Plaquemine Ferry service will be suspended on Friday, Jan. 8 starting at 6 a.m. to allow maintenance crews to rebuild a higher access ramp for vehicles to board the ferry.

This project will allow the ferry to remain in service for additional days as the Mississippi River stages continue to rise. It is expected to take up to eight hours, and the ferry will return to service upon completion.

The operating hours for the Plaquemine Ferry are 4:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, with a second ferry in service from 3:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Weekend hours are 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. In the event that the river rises to a level that makes it unsafe to operate, DOTD will alert the public.

Before traveling drivers are urged to call the toll-free Ferry Information line at 1 (888) 613-3779 for the status of the ferry, or visit the “Ferry Status” page on DOTD’s website.
