DOTD prepares to shift traffic on new Curtis-Coleman Memorial (Ft. Buhlow) Bridge; announces permanent closure of O.K. Allen Bridge

ALEXANDRIA/PINEVILLE, La. – Today, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced that on Tuesday, March 17, at 10 a.m. two-way traffic utilizing the O.K. Allen Bridge will be redirected to begin utilizing the northbound structure of the new Curtis - Coleman Memorial Bridge, formerly known as the Ft. Buhlow Bridge, on U.S. 71/165.
Additionally, beginning Tuesday, March 17, exit 71B (I-49 North to Shreveport) will be closed to all southbound traffic, on US 71/165, when entering Alexandria from the new northbound bridge structure. This closure is necessary to allow crews to realign the ramp, as part of this $82.9 million bridge replacement project. This closure is estimated to last approximately three months.
To access I-49 North, motorists should continue south on U.S. 71/165, follow I-49 South detour signs for approximately 0.8 of a mile and take exit 70 (U.S. 165 Business /LA 1). Next, motorists will need to stay right at the end of the ramp, take La. 1 South and continue to follow the I-49 South detour signs to Exit 71B (I-49 North to Shreveport).
Upon completion of the traffic shift, the O. K. Allen Bridge will be closed to traffic permanently and the contractor will begin preliminary demolition of the O. K. Allen Bridge in order to continue construction of the southbound bridge structure.
Motorists can expect traffic delays while the traffic shift is implemented.
