BATON ROUGE, La. – Today, Louisiana DOTD Safe Routes to School Program announced that it is partnering with Saris Cycling Group (SGC), a United States manufacturer of bicycle racks and cycling training products, to organize the 4th annual Fifth Grade National Bicycling Poster Contest. The contest consists of fifth graders creating a poster around the famous John F. Kennedy quote, “Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.” The purpose of the contest is to promote bicycle riding among young people as a way to lead a healthy lifestyle.

One winner will be selected from each participating state and will receive a bike, bike light and helmet. The deadline for the posters is March 7. One national winner will be chosen and will be awarded a trip to the 2015 National Bike Summit in Washington, D.C. Additionally, the school will receive a designated bicycle parking area to accommodate twenty bikes and a bike/walk tracking system called The Hub.

“The contest provides an interactive activity to get students excited about learning, and provides teachers a creative way to introduce healthy living concepts,” said SCG Advocacy Coordinator Heather Fortune. “This is a great technique to encourage fifth graders to simply think about the bicycle and its inherent benefits.”
