U.S. 190 – Amite River Bridge Project
Livingston Parish
Nov. 10, 2009

Current work:
Work has begun on building the haul road on the west side of the river. This road will be used by the contractor to bring materials to and from the job site.

Pile driving operations should start again on the new eastbound span in approximately one month. The new span is on schedule to be complete by Dec. 2010.

Brief description of completed work:
The contractor has completed building the haul road on the east side of the river. The haul road was used by the contractor to bring equipment and building material to and from the job site while working on the new westbound span.

All four of the test piles have been driven. Test piles help to gather information on the conditions at the job site such as installation methods for future piles and soil type. The information determines proper pile lengths and driving criteria for the production piles for the new bridge.

The contractor completed the westbound roadway and bridge. Traffic was moved to the new bridge on Sept. 11, 2009.

The old westbound bridge was demolished on Oct. 21, 2009. Click here for a video of the demolition.

Ramp Metering Meeting Tonight
The third and final meeting about ramp metering will be held tonight from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Southside Junior High School in Denham Springs. The purpose of the public meeting is to discuss ramp metering, a new traffic management tool DOTD will implement along the I-12 corridor. Ramp metering is a proactive approach to traffic management designed to space out traffic entering the interstate. This helps to reduce congestion on the interstate and improves safety by lowering the numbers of crashes that occur at the ramps. The technology been used successfully in several other urban areas around the country for years.

The ramp meter is a traffic signal located on the interstate on-ramp that allows vehicles to proceed one at a time onto the interstate, providing the spacing needed to assist the flow of traffic onto the interstate. The ramp meters will operate only during peak traffic hours – the morning commute on the westbound side and the evening commute on the eastbound side.

The technology will ease congestion during the I-12 widening project and help to preserve the capacity of the widening project when construction is complete. Implementation of the ramp meters will begin in early 2010, and they will be turned on in the spring of 2010.
