BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has upgraded its 511 Traveler Information Service to enable motorists with web-enabled devices to easily access the web-based system to receive up-to-date information about construction activities, weather-related road conditions and critical incidents in Louisiana.

The 511 mobile site, which can be accessed at www.511la.org, is designed and optimized specifically for the small screens and lower bandwidth availability of web-enabled phones, including smartphones such as the Android®, Blackberry® and iPhone®. The website contains around-the-clock, real-time traffic and road condition updates and access to traffic cameras in major regions throughout Louisiana.

“Linking transportation and technology through the use of the mobile 511 Traveler Information Service site is an important step forward for DOTD and how we communicate to the traveling public. Not only can motorists make informed decisions before traveling, but they can now access real-time travel information while on the go, allowing them to reach their destinations more quickly and safely,” said DOTD Secretary Sherri H. LeBas.

In addition to accessing travel information through the online 511 Traveler Information Service, motorists can also dial 5-1-1 to receive travel updates while driving within Louisiana. Out-of-state callers can assess the system by dialing 888-ROAD-511 (888-762-3511).

DOTD launched the original 511 system in 2007. The 511 Traveler Information Service is part of a nationwide effort to provide consistent and reliable traveler information. The Federal Communications Commission designated 511 as the national traveler information phone number in July 2000, in response to a 1999 U.S. Department of Transportation petition.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is committed to delivering transportation and public works systems that enhance the quality of life. In addition to more than 16,000 miles of roadway, including over 890 miles of interstate, DOTD supports the development of the state’s aviation, marine and rail infrastructures. Through this work, we are able to facilitate economic development, created job opportunities, improve vital evacuation routes and make critical freight corridors safer and more efficient.
