REMINDER - DOTD to convert LA 150/LA 818/Tarbutton Rd. intersection in Ruston to all-way stop to improve safety

RUSTON, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development reminds the traveling public that safety at an intersection in Ruston, Lincoln Parish is being improved by converting it to an all-way (four-way) stop today, Wednesday, June 2, 2021.

The intersection of LA 150/LA 818/Tarbutton Road is being converted from a two-way stop with flashing beacon to an all-way stop.

This intersection is located just south of the new I-20/Tarbutton Road interchange.

This change comes as the result of a Road Safety Assessment conducted by DOTD, the Regional Transportation Safety Coalition, the Lincoln Parish Police Jury, the City of Ruston, and local law enforcement.

This assessment analyzed traffic data and crash history, as well as possible countermeasures that could be implemented to improve safety at the intersection.

DOTD is installing temporary rumble strips along LA 150 to increase awareness of the new four-way stop configuration. DOTD is also installing oversized 48 inch “STOP” signs with “ALL WAY” stop plaques, and “STOP AHEAD” warning signs along LA 150.

The existing flashing beacon is being modified to flash all red.

All-way stops – along with accompanying warning signage and beacons - have been shown to have the potential to reduce the risk and severity of crashes because motorists are approaching the intersection at a lower speed.

As a reminder, when approaching an all-way stop, the first vehicle to arrive has the right-of-way. However, motorists should always yield to emergency vehicles and pedestrians.

When two vehicles arrive at the intersection at the same time, the vehicle to the right should proceed first. When two vehicles approach at the same time head-to-head and one is turning, the vehicle going straight has the right-of-way. In the same scenario, if one vehicle is turning right and one is turning left, the right turning vehicle should proceed first.
