Project update: LA 385 (Ryan Street)/LA 384 (University Drive) intersection improvements

LAKE CHARLES - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces that work continues on the construction of the inside lanes and new center turn lanes on LA 384 (University Drive). Motorists are advised LA 384 will continue to be reduced to one in lane each direction during this phase.

The contractor has completed the widening on LA 385 (Ryan Street), and the temporary widening on LA 384 which allows traffic to be maintained while the new lanes on LA 384 are constructed. Upcoming work includes the reconstruct of existing outside lanes on LA 384, pavement modifications on Jefferson Drive, and resurfacing on LA 385. Motorists can expect a traffic shift to the newly constructed lanes on LA 384 soon. DOTD will announce the date of the traffic shift when that information becomes available.

The $2 million project will install a dedicated left turn lane on LA 385 southbound, install pedestrian crossing signals at all four corners of the intersection of LA 384/LA 385 and McNeese Street, and change the reconfiguration of LA 384 north and southbound lanes. The below graphic provides an overview of how the intersection will be after the completion of the project.

The project has experienced weather delays and utility conflicts, and is now expected to be complete in Summer 2020. All work and activity is dependent on weather.

DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment.

Area residents should exercise caution when driving, walking, or biking near an active construction zone.
