US 61: Bayou Manchac & Bayou Francois Bridges, Intermittent Lane Closures, East Baton Rouge & Ascension Parishes

Construction has begun for State Project H.000337 US 61: Bayou Manchac & Bayou Francois Bridges, East Baton Rouge & Ascension Parishes for a length of 1.490 miles. The type of work is clearing and grubbing, removal of bridges, grading, drainage structures, class II base course, lime treatment, pavement patching, milling asphalt concrete, asphalt concrete pavement, riprap, flexible revetment, precast concrete barrier, temporary detour roads, precast concrete piles, concrete slab span bridge, precast pre-stressed concrete girder bridges, temporary detour bridge (concrete) and related work.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises motorists of upcoming closures:

Bayou Francois Bridge construction lane closure on US 61 (Airline Hwy.) from LA 939 (Purpera Rd.) to ¼ mile south of Purpera Rd. will open traffic to motorists. Motorists will have both lanes again in southbound direction beginning November 21, 2019 thru November 30, 2019.

Beginning December 1, 2019 thru December 4, 2019 the contractor will commence with single lane closures in the southbound lanes of US 61 (Airline Hwy.) Simultaneously, work will take place in the northbound lane of US 61 (Airline Hwy.) with intermittent single lane closures, from December 1, 2019 thru December 4, 2019. These closures are necessary in order for the contractor to mill and pave outside shoulders, lay the crossover for the detour road, stripe the roadway to open traffic onto detour road.

The detour road will shift traffic going southbound on US 61 onto the northbound lane of US 61, this configuration will have one lane in each direction. The detour road will be open beginning December 5, 2019 as crews begin the removal of southbound bridge and will remain in this configuration for the duration of the replacement of the bridge. The replacement of bridge anticipated completion date is Summer of 2020.



DOTD will continually update on lane restrictions.

No vehicles wider than 12’ will be allowed to pass through during these times.
