The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces the installation of new railroad signs at the spur crossing of US 90, at milepost 138.2, near Patoutville in Iberia Parish, on Wednesday, February 14. The installation of these signs will increase safety by reducing the number of vehicles required to stop at the crossing when a train is not present.

The new signs will feature a legend EXEMPT, signalizing to drivers of highway vehicles carrying hazardous materials that a stop is not required at the designated crossing, except when rail traffic is approaching or occupying the crossing or if the driver’s view is blocked.
According to federal regulations, certain vehicles are currently required to stop at crossings, however, if the crossing is marked with EXEMPT, then they can cross without stopping.
