US 190 & US 171 Traffic Signal Retiming & Lane Modifications in DeRidder – Beauregard Parish

DeRidder – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has recently performed a traffic study to modify signal timings and improve efficiency of ten (10) signalized intersections on US 171 and US 190 in the City of DeRidder in Beauregard Parish. The study analyzed vehicular volumes, pedestrian volumes and movements, crash history, as well as system coordination. The signalized intersections included within the study are as follows:

• US 171 (Pine Street) @ North Walmart Drive
• US 171 (Pine Street) @ Park Road
• US 171 (Pine Street) @ North Street/West Drive
• US 171 (Pine Street) @ Port Street
• US 171 – US 190 (Shirley Street) @ US 171 (Pine Street)
• US 171 (Pine Street) @ US 190 (1st Street)/LA 27
• US 190 (1st Street) @ Texas Street
• US 171 – US 190 (1st Street) @ Washington Street
• US 171 – US 190 (Shirley Street) @ Washington Street
• US 190 (Shirley Street) @ Texas Street

The study recommendations are to modify lane assignments at the intersection of US 171 – US 190 (Shirley Street) at US 171 (Pine Street). These lane assignments modifications include modifying the northbound approach left turn/through lane to a left turn only lane and modify westbound approach from dual right turn lanes to a single unrestricted right turn lane. Motorist making a right turn from the westbound approach right lane are now unimpeded by crossing traffic while turning into nearest available lane (northbound right lane). Additional study recommendations include retiming of both permitted and protected approaches at all 10 signalized intersections, and modifying when the protected left turn arrows are serviced, i.e. a left turn may have been serviced at the beginning of approach green and now it may be at the end. No protected left turn arrows were eliminated.

These improvements are necessary to ensure pedestrians and motorists traveling throughout the City of DeRidder experience safe travel and experience minimal delays and congestion.

DOTD and engineering consultant crews began implementing these modifications on Monday, December 11, 2017 and will be completed the evening of Thursday, December 14, 2017. DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to be on the lookout for work crews and equipment.

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.
