Work begins to reopen lanes on New Orleans I-10 High Rise

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is moving forward with implementing temporary repairs on the Interstate 10 Highrise Bridge in an effort to reopen two lanes closed due to damage caused by a fire on Wednesday night. A local contractor, Boh Brothers, is in place and gathering materials and supplies needed to start construction on a support system beginning on Saturday, Nov. 18.
The eastbound left and center lanes remain closed following a tire fire, which caused significant damage to two girders under the bridge.
“We know the traffic situation is causing an inconvenience for travelers in this area,” said DOTD Secretary Shawn D. Wilson, Ph.D. “I have been in contact with Congressman Cedric Richmond and Councilman James Gray regarding the impact on residents related to the limited access to the Highrise Bridge. We are taking steps to ensure mobility in the community is a priority and are working with law enforcement to make the appropriate and necessary adjustments. Shortly after the incident, DOTD made traffic signal timing changes to mitigate the unexpected changes in traffic patterns. Our traffic engineers have been making adjustments to the traffic signal timings along US 90 corridor to facilitate the movement of traffic on this alternate route. The City of New Orleans has also responded aggressively to meet the traffic demands related to this event.”
