Baton Rouge, LA – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced today that it is issuing a request for proposals (RFP) for sponsorship of the statewide Motorist Assistance Patrol (MAP) program. The selected contractor will solicit sponsors for the program. Written inquiries about the RFP must be submitted by February 28, 2019. The deadline for proposals is March 20, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. CST. The RFP can be found on DOTD’s website here.

Sponsorship of MAP provides a supplemental funding source for the program, and it furthers DOTD’s efforts to reduce delay and improve safety for the motoring public without requiring additional tax dollars. It will also highlight the sponsor’s commitment to auto safety. Sponsor fees will be used by DOTD to financially support the operation of the MAP vehicles.

The MAP program has been sponsored by State Farm since December 2013 and has been highly effective in assisting stranded motorists in Louisiana’s largest metro areas. MAP reduces traffic congestion caused by stalled vehicles and provides safety and comfort to those stranded. With an average of 600 motorists assisted each week, DOTD has helped thousands of Louisiana interstate travelers over the past few years.

DOTD’s MAP service is free to the public and provides the following services:

  • One gallon of fuel
  • Flat tire change
  • Jump start
  • Water to fill radiator
  • Use of a cell phone for additional assistance if needed
MAP operators are qualified first responders, quick thinkers, and customer-oriented. In addition to assisting with vehicle problems, these contracted employees are often the first to arrive at the scene of an accident and must calm motorists in times of high stress. Operators are also responsible for coordinating through radio dispatch the timely arrival of emergency medical services, tow trucks, law enforcement, and other service providers.

Service is available primarily along interstates in the New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Alexandria, and Shreveport/Bossier City areas. For detailed maps of coverage areas, please visit www.dotd.la.gov.
