DOTD prepares to Open US 190 in Walker

The unprecedented August floods demonstrated the powerful force of water by causing severe damage to the US 190 bridge crossing Coyell Creek in Walker. DOTD was forced to close the bridge because it was impassable.
DOTD determined it was in the public’s best interest to repair the bridge with internal crews. This decision was based on the department's abilities and the need to have the bridge open in time for the first day of the delayed start of school in Livingston parish.
“The force of water is strong, but so is the commitment to public safety and public service," said DOTD Secretary, Dr. Shawn Wilson. "I couldn't be more proud of the DOTD bridge crews which included forces from the Hammond and Shreveport districts that worked tirelessly to reconstruct this bridge in time for students returning to school in Livingston Parish. It shows the resourcefulness of DOTD's workforce. We can equally respond to a crisis created by nature such as this."
Because of the severe erosion from this flood event, DOTD crews added a new span to the western side of the bridge. This work involved driving pilings to support the new span.
DOTD is installing the final layer of asphalt this evening. They will then install striping and clean up the site to ensure the traveling public can cross safely. DOTD anticipates having all work complete and all lanes open by late afternoon Sunday, Sept. 11.
DOTD appreciates the public's patience as we worked to do its part in bringing communities back following the flood of 2016.
