Reminder: DOTD announces daytime weekend closures of Houma Tunnel for maintenance and upgrades

HOUMA – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development reminds residents that the LA 3040 Houma Tunnel will be closed to traffic during daytime hours this weekend while crews complete maintenance and improvement work inside the tunnel.
The tunnel will be fully closed in both directions from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, September 26, and again from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, September 27, weather permitting. The tunnel will reopen to traffic overnight between the two closures.
The work includes reinstalling recently rebuilt ventilation fan motors, installing new electrical conduit inside the tunnel and inspecting the existing tunnel lighting system.
The rebuilt ventilation motors will be reinstalled in the electrical house above the tunnel on Dunn Street. The new conduit is being installed in preparation for cameras that may be added as part of a future project. DOTD crews will also inspect the existing lighting system to help determine future repair needs.
The project includes the ventilation motor and electrical conduit work. Crews hope to complete the scheduled work Saturday; however, motorists should plan for the tunnel to be closed during the announced hours on both Saturday and Sunday.
Motorists should allow additional travel time and use alternate routes while the tunnel is closed. DOTD encourages drivers to use caution near the work area and monitor 511la.org for the latest road and closure information.
