DOTD advances Boudreaux Canal Bridge replacement on LA 56

TERREBONNE PARISH – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is moving forward with the replacement of the Boudreaux Canal Bridge on LA 56. The project represents an estimated $56 million investment in Terrebonne Parish and marks a major milestone for the long-awaited project.
The existing movable bridge was built in 1959 and has recently required maintenance and emergency attention as the structure has aged. With a full replacement moving forward, DOTD is advancing the new bridge as a long-term investment in the transportation infrastructure serving Terrebonne Parish and the Chauvin/Cocodrie area.
This project has been advertised for construction, and bids are scheduled to be received on October 14, 2026.
“Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes are vital to Louisiana’s economy, and reliable transportation infrastructure is essential to the communities and industries that depend on them,” said DOTD Secretary Glenn Ledet. “Movable bridges play a critical role in supporting both roadway travel and marine commerce. Advancing the Boudreaux Canal Bridge replacement reflects DOTD’s commitment to moving important infrastructure projects forward efficiently and delivering long-term improvements for the region.”
DOTD is working to complete key coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard as well as federal authorization from the Federal Highway Administration to advance the project. Utility relocation is being initiated in advance of construction with assistance from Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Waterworks.
Terrebonne Parish relies heavily on movable bridges for daily travel, emergency response, business access, marine traffic and hurricane evacuation. The Boudreaux Canal Bridge project is part of DOTD’s broader effort to address those transportation needs through bridge replacement, rehabilitation and preservation.
“Replacing the Boudreaux Canal bridge is crucial to the economic stability of the Chauvin/Cocodrie community. Local businesses took a huge financial hit during the Robinson Canal bridge replacement. We are optimistic the new leadership at DOTD will replace this bridge on time,” Rep. Jessica Domangue said.

By maintaining open communication and fostering strong partnerships with DOTD, we are working together to improve infrastructure and keep Terrebonne moving forward.”
Additional information regarding the construction schedule, traffic impacts and other project details will be announced following the public bid opening and award of the construction contract.
