$5.5 Million U.S. 190 R-Cut Project to Begin Near Port Barre

St. Landry Parish, LA — St. Landry Parish, La. — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces that construction will begin Monday, September 14, 2026, on a $5.5 million project to construct an R-Cut on US 190 at the intersection of LA 741 near Port Barre.
The project will modify the intersection to improve traffic operations and reduce potential conflicts associated with turning movements.
What is an R-Cut?
An R-Cut, or Restricted Crossing U-Turn, is an intersection design that changes how motorists make left turns and cross traffic. Rather than making a direct left turn across opposing lanes, motorists turn right onto the main roadway, make a U-turn at a designated location, and continue in the desired direction.
This design reduces the number of locations where vehicles cross paths and can provide more predictable traffic movements through the intersection.
Project Benefits
Once complete, the R-Cut is expected to improve the overall operation of the US 190 and LA 741 intersection by reducing conflict points and providing a more consistent way for motorists to make turning movements.
Construction will include clearing and grubbing, grading, drainage structures, milling asphalt concrete, pavement patching, subgrade treatment, Class II base course, pavement widening, asphalt concrete overlay and related work.
Work is anticipated to take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting. Intermittent lane closures will be necessary, and motorists should expect delays and allow additional time for travel.
Emergency vehicles will have access to the area but may encounter delays during construction.
The project is estimated for completion in spring 2027.
