PROJECT UPDATE: LA 302 Bayou Barataria Movable Bridge Project Advances (Jefferson Parish)

JEFFERSON PARISH – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces continued progress on the $59.5 million LA 302 Bayou Barataria Movable Bridge Project in Lafitte, commonly known as the Victor Kerner Bridge.
Major structural work on the new movable bridge is nearing completion, with about 95 percent of the steel structure for the movable span complete. Crews are now focusing on the equipment and systems needed to operate the bridge.
Work is also advancing on both bridge approaches. On the east side, crews have made substantial progress on the operator house, access walkway, and backup generator. On the west side, the bridge deck is substantially complete, with grading and site cleanup underway.
The roadway portion of the project is about 85 percent complete. Motorists are now using the newly constructed section of LA 45 while crews continue connecting the roadway to the new bridge.
Upcoming work includes installing and testing bridge operating equipment, completing remaining bridge work, and continuing construction of the roadway connections.
The project is anticipated to be completed in the third quarter of 2027, weather permitting.
Once complete, the new movable bridge will provide increased vertical clearance over Bayou Barataria, reducing the number of openings needed for marine traffic. It will also include a hybrid-driven swing system and a natural-gas-powered backup generator to support bridge operations after storms or power outages.
The new bridge will permanently replace the former Leo Kerner Swing Bridge, which was taken out of service after being damaged during Hurricane Ida in 2021. A temporary bridge was installed after the storm to maintain access between Barataria and Jean Lafitte.
The $59.5 million project includes approximately $55 million for bridge construction and $4.5 million for associated roadway improvements.
