DOTD Announces I-12 Median Barrier Retrofit Project in EBR/Livingston Parish

EAST BATON ROUGE/LIVINGSTON PARISHES – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces an upcoming improvement project along I-12 in East Baton Rouge and Livingston parishes that is designed to improve drainage during heavy rainfall events while maintaining interstate safety standards.

The $6.4 million project was bid on June 10.

The project limits extend approximately 13 miles along I-12, beginning with a short section in East Baton Rouge Parish near the Livingston Parish line and continuing through Livingston Parish. Construction will not occur continuously throughout the corridor. Instead, work will be concentrated at seven separate locations totaling approximately 2.4 miles.

Work will involve modifications to selected sections of the existing concrete median barrier system. The retrofit design will allow water to move more efficiently across the interstate median during heavy rain while maintaining the continuous concrete barrier system required for interstate safety.

I-12 is one of southeast Louisiana’s major east-west corridors, serving commuters, freight traffic, emergency responders and regional travel. The corridor carries approximately 90,000 vehicles per day.

Interstate concrete median barriers must be designed to withstand and redirect high-speed impacts, including crashes involving large commercial vehicles. Because of these safety requirements, any modifications to the barrier system must comply with strict federal crash and structural standards while also improving water movement through the corridor.

Work is currently expected to begin by the end of September and is estimated to be completed by late 2027 or early 2028. DOTD will provide additional information as lane closure details, traffic impacts and individual work schedules are finalized.
