NEW ORLEANS — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces that the westbound US 90 Business Harvey Tunnel is expected to reopen to traffic on Tuesday evening, March 17, 2026, as work continues on the $54 million US 90: Harvey Tunnel Rehabilitation Project.
The eastbound Harvey Tunnel reopened to traffic on Friday, March 6, following completion of major upgrades to the facility.
The reopening of the westbound tunnel marks a major milestone in the project, restoring full traffic operations through the tunnel for the first time since rehabilitation work began.
While traffic will resume in both directions, some remaining construction activities will continue through April. These activities will primarily occur during nighttime hours and may require periodic lane closures. Motorists are encouraged to use caution and follow all posted signage when traveling through the work zone.
The $54 million rehabilitation project includes major upgrades designed to ensure the Harvey Tunnel continues to serve as a dependable transportation corridor for the Westbank community. Improvements include new roadway approaches, improved driving surfaces, updated LED lighting systems, and a modern fire and smoke detection system. Additional upgrades include sealant work to help prevent floodwaters from entering the roadway and improvements to the tunnel’s pump systems to enhance drainage capabilities.
The Harvey Tunnel first opened to traffic in 1957, and this project represents the first full rehabilitation of the facility since it was originally constructed.
