PROJECT UPDATE: US 171 (Hearne Ave) asphalt overlay, Caddo Parish

(PROJECT UPDATE 3/6/2026): DOTD advises motorists that the contractor for the ongoing $9.6 million project to repair a section of US 171 (Hearne Ave) in Shreveport will soon begin milling operations to remove the old asphalt in preparation for new paving.

The milling operations are scheduled to begin on Thursday, March 12, 2026 (weather permitting), and will start in the outside northbound and southbound lanes.

While we are working to limit the amount of time motorists are driving on the milled surface, please be advised that some driving on the milled lanes will be necessary. A milled surface is rougher than a paved lane, so please drive slowly and carefully.

In the meantime, other construction activities are continuing, such as sidewalk ramps and curb repairs.

Drivers are strongly urged to use caution through the construction zone, and please adhere to the posted speed limit. As a reminder, this project stretches from US 80 (Greenwood Rd) to LA 3132, which is about 4.6 miles of roadway improvements.

The entire project is anticipated to wrap up in Summer 2026, with progress dependent on weather conditions and other factors that can impact construction timelines.

DOTD advises motorists that the contractor for the ongoing $9.6 million project to repair a section of US 171 (Hearne Ave) in Shreveport has completed the leveling of the full-depth patching portion of the project.

The leveling ensures that the patches (which were done to improve the roadway base) are the correct height and smoothness in preparation for the milling and paving operations.

In the coming days, the contractor will begin the milling and overlay phase of the project, which will ultimately provide a fresh, new driving surface for Hearne Ave from US 80 (Greenwood Rd) to LA 3132.

In the meantime, other construction activities will be taking place, such as repair of the concrete curb along the project.

Drivers are strongly urged to exercise caution through the construction zone, and please adhere to the posted speed limit.

The entire project is anticipated to wrap up in Summer 2026, with progress dependent on weather conditions and other factors that can impact construction timelines.

Previous update - 2/4/2026:

SHREVEPORT – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development provided today an update on the ongoing $9.6 million project to repair a section of US 171 (Hearne Ave) in Shreveport, Caddo Parish.

The project stretches from US 80 (Greenwood Road) to LA 3132, approximately 4.6 miles of improvements.

The contractor, Earnest Contracting, LLC., is nearing completion of the full-depth base repairs phase of the project, which is anticipated to wrap up in about 2-3 weeks. This phase is a critical component of the construction process, as it addresses any issues with the roadway base at specific locations to strengthen the road and help prevent future problems.

Once the full-depth patching phase is complete, the contractor will move into the milling process, which is the removal of the old, damaged asphalt in preparation for new asphalt paving.

The goal is to limit the amount of time motorists are driving on a milled surface, so effort is being made to pave as quickly as possible after the milling. Once the entire project is paved with fresh asphalt, permanent striping will be applied.

Motorists should be aware that intermittent lane closures will remain in place at various locations along the project length to allow for safe, efficient construction activities to take place. It is imperative that drivers slow down through the work zone, pay attention to any flagging operations in place, and be mindful of crews and their equipment on site.

The entire project is anticipated to wrap up in Summer 2026, with progress dependent on weather conditions and other factors that can impact construction timelines.

This project is made possible by funding allocated from the Louisiana Transportation Infrastructure Fund (LTIF) voted on by the state legislature.
