DOTD continues to urge motorists to avoid I-20 between Bienville & Ouachita Parishes LINCOLN PARISH, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is strongly urging motorists to avoid traveling on I-20 westbound from Ruston to Monroe and I-20 eastbound from Arcadia to Minden as hazardous winter weather conditions continue to cause severe congestion and slow-moving traffic.
Traffic is currently moving very slowly in both directions along this stretch of I-20. Motorists are reaching the back of the traffic queue faster than the front of the queue can clear, resulting in extended delays. Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes or postpone travel if possible.
DOTD crews are working around the clock in coordination with Louisiana State Police, Louisiana National Guard and other partner agencies to clear roadways and restore traffic flow. However, motorists should be aware that progress may remain slow due to ongoing weather impacts.
Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing again overnight, increasing the risk of black ice forming on roadways. Black ice can develop anywhere roads remain wet, not just on I-20. Bridges, overpasses, shaded areas, and lesser-traveled roads are especially vulnerable, even if pavement appears clear.
Motorists who must travel are urged to follow these safety precautions:
- Drive slowly and cautiously
- Do not use cruise control
- Reduce speed in low visibility
- Maintain a safe following distance
- Watch for DOTD crews and emergency responders
- Never drive around barricades on closed roadways.
