DOTD continues to urge motorists to avoid I-20 between Bienville & Ouachita Parishes LINCOLN PARISH - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development continues to warn motorists to avoid traveling portions of I-20 in the northern regions of the state as hazardous conditions persist in the wake of Winter Storm Fern.
Extreme delays and congestion are present on I-20 westbound Bienville to Ouachita Parishes due to stalled and stopped 18-wheelers. This is an ative situation, so DOTD will provide additional updates as necessary.
DOTD crews continue their non-stop efforts to work with Louisiana State Police and other agencies to clear the roadways and get traffic flowing. However, hours-long delays are possible due to the length of time it takes to restore traffic flow in the current conditions.
Significant accumulations of snow & ice have impacted travel on numerous roadways, with 24-hour operations continuing by DOTD crews to clear & de-ice state highways across north Louisiana.
Temperatures are expected to drop well below freezing overnight, causing remaining slush to re-freeze and creating additional hazards.
If driving is absolutely essential, motorists should adhere to the following safety tips:
- Drive slowly and carefully.
- Avoid driving while distracted.
- Always allow for extra driving time.
- Avoid using cruise control.
- Reduce speeds when visibility is low.
- Make sure there is plenty of room between vehicles.
- Always wear your seatbelt.
- Be on the lookout for DOTD crews and other emergency responders and their equipment.
- Remember that it’s unlawful and unsafe to drive around a road closed barricade for any reason.
