DOTD continues to urge caution during wintry weather
Sunday, January 25, 2026 at 9:05:20 AM
Baton Rouge, LA - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) advises that some state roadways in the central/northern areas of the state are closed due to wintry weather conditions. DOTD staff continues to use de-icing materials to keep roads passable as long as possible. Motorists should avoid being on the roadways if travel is not absolutely necessary. Some bridges and overpasses may become unsafe for travel before a closure notice is issued, so drivers should take responsibility to drive accordingly.

DOTD personnel are continuing to respond and take precautionary measures as weather conditions change. Crews continue to scout bridges and overpasses, and field crews are continually pre-treating roadways as necessary. DOTD is also closely monitoring the weather forecast and remains in close contact with the National Weather Service.

DOTD is prepared to close certain bridges and overpasses that are deemed impassable, or those that have been identified as preemptive emergency closures as part of each region’s snow and ice plan as applicable.

During winter weather conditions, motorists should adhere to the following driving safety tips if driving is essential:

  • Drive slowly and carefully.
  • Avoid driving while distracted.
  • Always allow for extra driving time.
  • Avoid using cruise control.
  • Reduce speeds when visibility is low.
  • Make sure there is plenty of room between vehicles.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • Be on the lookout for DOTD crews and other emergency responders and their equipment.
  • Remember that it’s unlawful and unsafe to drive around a road closed barricade for any reason.
