METAIRIE, La. — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) advises motorists of upcoming weekend lane closures on the eastbank-bound Huey P. Long Bridge to allow crews to perform finger joint repairs and related work.
Continuous two right-lane closures will be in effect on the eastbank-bound side of the bridge from 10:00 p.m. Friday, January 16, through 5:00 a.m. Monday, January 19. The Huey P. Long Bridge has three lanes in each direction, and one lane will remain open to traffic at all times during this work.
This closure will not impact westbound traffic on the Huey P. Long Bridge.
The work is part of a larger project to repair finger joints, which are steel expansion joints made up of interlocking metal “fingers.” These joints allow the bridge to safely expand and contract with changes in temperature and traffic loads. Repairing them helps maintain a safe driving surface and extends the life of the bridge.
This weekend’s work is the first of several planned weekend closures that will be needed to complete finger joint repairs. Additional closure dates will be announced as they are scheduled.
DOTD encourages motorists to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use caution when driving through work zones. All construction activities are weather permitting.
