DOTD Moves Forward with Environmental Assessment for New Mississippi River Bridge

Baton Rouge, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has approved the start of an Environmental Assessment (EA) for a new proposed Mississippi River bridge south of Baton Rouge.

The approval marks a significant step in advancing the project. It begins the formal process of public and stakeholder engagement to ensure the bridge is planned responsibly, with transparency and community input. Findings from the EA will guide the selection of a preferred alternative and lay the groundwork for federal approval to move into the design and construction phase once funding is secured.

“We are excited to reach this important milestone on this vital project. This step will allow DOTD to continue to advance this project with FHWA.” said DOTD Secretary Glenn Ledet. “Additionally, as we continue to move this project in the right direction, it is crucial for the public to be engaged in the upcoming meetings as this is an important part of the NEPA process.”

The EA is being conducted under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), a federal law that requires federally funded transportation projects to evaluate potential impacts before moving forward. The review considers environmental, community and transportation effects while comparing alternatives.

As part of the EA, DOTD is developing more detailed road design, alignment, conceptual bridge designs and cost estimates for three alternatives. These options will be presented at public meetings in early 2026.

Two community briefings have been scheduled to provide residents with an overview of the project:
  • Tuesday, December 9, 5-7 p.m.
  • St. Gabriel Community Center- St. Gabriel, La.
  • Wednesday, December 10, 5-7 p.m.
  • Plaquemine Community Center- Plaquemine, La.

Four larger public meetings, two on the east bank and two on the west bank, will follow in early 2026. Dates and locations will be announced in the coming weeks.
