DOTD Announces Start of Next I-49 South Project, U.S. 90 Railroad Overpass in Iberia Parish

IBERIA PARISH, La. - Today, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced that construction has started on a $50 million dollar I-49 South (Geaux South) project in Iberia Parish to further upgrade U.S. 90 to interstate standards.

The project will involve constructing two overpasses on U.S. 90 eastbound and westbound over the Patout Railroad between La. 85 (Patout Road) and La. 668.

PROJECT SCOPE
Work associated with the construction of the overpasses will consist of precast concrete piles, precast-prestressed concrete girders, mechanically stabilized earth wall concrete panels, temporary detour roads, subgrade treatment, class II base course, drainage structures, concrete pavement, signage, striping, and related work.

WORK SCHEDULE
Work is expected to take place Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. along with intermittent night and Sunday work, weather permitting.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS
U.S. 90 westbound is currently reduced to one lane with a 12-foot wide maximum lane restriction. This lane reduction and width restriction will continue to remain in effect.

U.S. 90 eastbound will experience intermittent lane closures with a 12-foot wide maximum lane restriction that is currently in place. This restriction will continue to remain in effect.

U.S. 90 eastbound and westbound will remain open throughout this project.

Emergency vehicle will have access to this area but may encounter delays.

The project is estimated to be completed by September 2027.

WHAT IS GEAUX SOUTH?
The Geaux South program is a multi-billion, multi-year construction initiative to convert approximately 160 miles of the current U.S. 90 corridor from Lafayette to New Orleans to Interstate 49.
