DOTD Launches Pilot “Sponsor A Highway” Program to Combat Litter

Baton Rouge, La. - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has partnered with Adopt A Highway Maintenance Corporation (AHMC) to launch a pilot program aimed at enhancing litter removal along state highways. DOTD’s “Sponsor A Highway” program will be implemented in four key areas around the state: New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and Shreveport.

Through this partnership, AHMC will collaborate with local businesses to sponsor one-mile segments of highway along routes agreed upon with DOTD. In exchange for their support, sponsors will receive branded acknowledgment signs placed along the sponsored roadway. AHMC will then provide professional litter removal services a minimum of six times per year, with increased frequency based on sponsorship level.

“Litter removal is a costly, ongoing issue in Louisiana,” said DOTD Secretary Glenn Ledet. “This partnership helps ease the financial burden on taxpayers while creating a cleaner, more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.”

AHMC has a proven track record, working in more than 25 states to support public agencies in roadway maintenance. Their work has contributed to the removal of more than 25 million pounds of litter nationwide.

The program supports DOTD’s ongoing commitment to keep Louisiana’s roadways safe and clean. In fiscal year 2024 alone, DOTD spent approximately $13.6 million on litter removal efforts. The “Sponsor A Highway” program offers a sustainable way to offset these costs while also involving the business community in preserving Louisiana’s roadways.

More information about the “Sponsor A Highway” program, including how businesses can participate, will be announced in the coming weeks. The program’s fact sheet can be found here.
