PROJECT UPDATE: US 165 at Lonewa Rd. J-turns, Ouachita Parish

OUACHITA PARISH – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces a new contractor has been secured for the ongoing safety improvement project on US 165 at the Lonewa Road intersection in the Town of Sterlington, Ouachita Parish.

The company holding the surety bond has secured Expert Maintenance & Construction Services. LLC, who has mobilized on site and begun the remainder of the work in order to complete the project. The original contractor failed to fulfill its contractual obligations.

The new contractor will be tasked with building the final J-turn, which would complete all three J-turns originally planned as part of this project. The goal is to improve safety, accessibility, and traffic flow at the intersection.

J-turns (also called directional U-turns) serve to restrict the left turns and crossover movements that can lead to serious right angle (t-bone) type crashes by eliminating those vehicle conflict points.

Bulb-outs will also be striped at the J-turns to accommodate the turning radius of larger vehicles in order to allow them to merge safely into traffic.

DOTD is committed to seeing this project to completion, and remains confident that drivers will realize the long-term safety benefits these J-turns will provide. This type of traffic configuration has been proven to reduce the risk of crashes, and allow for a smoother commute.

The entire project is anticipated to be complete in late 2025, weather and other factors permitting.

DOTD would like to extend its appreciation to the community for their patience over the course of this project.
