DOTD Reinforces Commitment to Litter Removal with Statewide Cleanup Efforts

BATON ROUGE, LA- The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) continues to lead statewide efforts to combat litter, with a significant push during “Love the Boot Week," a campaign organized in partnership with Keep Louisiana Beautiful.

This year, DOTD coordinated a cleanup effort involving more than 1,100 volunteers, resulting in the removal of 720 cubic yards, or the equivalent of 45 large dump trucks, of litter across the state. While “Love the Boot Week” shines a spotlight on community involvement, DOTD’s commitment to cleaner roadways extends far beyond a single campaign.

In fiscal year 2024, DOTD invested approximately $13.6 million in litter removal-collecting the equivalent of more than 18 Olympic-sized swimming pools of trash. The initiative recently received an additional $3 million in state funding to target heavily traveled corridors with contracted cleanup crews.

The enhanced effort began ahead of the Super Bowl in New Orleans, where nearly 900 cubic yards of litter were removed. Crews are now focusing on interstates including I-10, I-12, I-20, I-110, and I-610. Later this year, cleanup operations will expand to more populated rural routes.

“This substantial investment reflects our continued commitment to cleaner, safer and more beautiful roadways,” said DOTD Assistant Secretary of Operations Todd Donmyer. “However, we also urge the public to consider what else these funds could support if littering wasn’t such a costly issue.”

DOTD encourages all Louisianans to take an active role in preventing litter and to participate in community cleanup events. For more information and ways to get involved, visit www.keeplouisianabeautiful.org.
