PROJECT UPDATE: US 165 safety improvement at Lonewa Rd., Ouachita Parish

OUACHITA PARISH – Today, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development provides an update on the status of the ongoing safety improvement project at the intersection of US 165 and Lonewa Road in the Town of Sterlington, Ouachita Parish.

The original contractor on the project failed to fulfill its contractual obligations and is in default. The company holding the surety bond is securing a contractor to come on site and finish construction on the project.

The selected contractor will be tasked with building the final J-turn, which would complete all three J-turns originally planned as part of this project that is aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and traffic flow at the intersection.

J-turns (also called directional U-turns) serve to restrict the left turns and crossover movements that can lead to serious right angle (t-bone) type crashes by eliminating those vehicle conflict points.

Despite DOTD’s efforts, construction has not progressed as initially planned. DOTD remains steadfast in seeing the project through to completion, and acknowledges the inconvenience the ongoing lane closures and temporary traffic configuration have created for the community.

DOTD is confident that motorists will reap the benefits of the completed J-turns once in place and functioning as designed.

Bulb-outs will also be striped at the J-turns to accommodate the turning radius of larger vehicles in order to allow them to merge safely into traffic.

DOTD will issue another update once the contractor has been secured and scheduled to begin work. A timeline for completion of the project will be provided at that time.
