Lake Charles – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces that the $101.7 million project to extend Nelson Road and build a bridge over Contraband Bayou in Calcasieu Parish is making progress.
The project is 30 percent complete. Johnson Brothers Construction – the project’s contractor – is nearing completion of structure work below the bridge decks, including piles, footings, columns and pile caps on the south side of Contraband Bayou. Drainage work is also ongoing.
Crews are scheduled to begin driving piles north of Contraband Bayou next week. Crews have completed the temporary working platform on the north side of Contraband Bayou, while prep work to build pier protection is ongoing.
Once complete, the new bridge will connect the heavily-traveled Nelson Road to West Sallier Street.
The project is anticipated to wrap up by early 2027, weather permitting.
