New Orleans, La. - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces the start of the $20.725 million Crescent City Connection Decorative Lighting Project. The project features LED lights on the trusses and piers of the bridges.
Frischhertz Electric Co. of New Orleans is constructing the project. Frischhertz also worked on the LED lighting project for the Caesars Superdome in 2012.
Work will begin this weekend, and lane closure announcements will be released through the MyDOTD notification system and listed on the 511la.org site. Residents can sign up for MyDOTD notifications by registering here: https://wwwapps.dotd.la.gov/administration/announcements/mydotd.aspx. An instruction sign-up video is also available (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yL_dFC3mWbU).
The Crescent City Connection Decorative Lighting Project was designed by Modjeski and Masters in 2023. The Pennsylvania-based firm has a storied history within Louisiana, including the design of the Crescent City Connection and the Huey P. Long bridges.
The original decorative lighting system was installed in 1987, a gift of the Young Leadership Council of New Orleans through a major capital fundraising campaign. Eventually, damage from Hurricane Ida created electrical system surges that resulted in the immediate shortage of replacement bulbs. The only remaining options were reconstructing an outdated electrical grid or the complete overhaul to a new technology.
The project is a joint venture between DOTD and the City of New Orleans.
