New Orleans, La. - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces that the Crescent City Connection Decorative Lighting Project has been advertised for bid and that the letting date is scheduled for Jan. 31, 2024. The project is for a new decorative lighting system for the Crescent City Connection bridges in New Orleans, featuring LED lights on the trusses of the bridges, along with lights illuminating the piers.

This will be the second letting date for the project. The original letting in December 2023 received no contractor bids; therefore, DOTD re-advertised the project today for January 31 and adjusted two parts of the request to receive more interest. The updated project advertisement can be found at this link: https://wwwapps.dotd.la.gov/engineering/lettings/bidsadvn/anhq20240131.aspx

A few amendments were made to the original advertisement to address potential constructability issues or concerns. The project now calls for more accessible materials and the option for contractors to have a continuous lane closure on weekends and overnights during the summer. The original advertisement didn’t allow any continuous lane closures. The project construction estimate has also been upwardly adjusted to $15-20 million.

The Crescent City Connection Decorative Lighting Project, currently ready for construction, was designed by Modjeski and Masters (M&M) in 2023.

The original decorative lighting system was installed in 1987, a gift of the Young Leadership Council of New Orleans through a major capital fundraising campaign. Eventually, damage from Hurricane Ida created electrical system surges that resulted in the immediate shortage of replacement bulbs. The only options that remained were the reconstruction of an outdated electrical grid or the complete overhaul to a new technology.

The project is a joint venture between DOTD and the city of New Orleans.
