DOTD temporarily allowing civilian escorts for oversize/overweight loads

Baton Rouge, LA – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces that it is temporarily allowing oversize/overweight permit holders to use civilian escorts instead of state police escorts on state highways. Due to efforts related to the winter weather response, state police availability for escorting is limited. Permit holders may use civilian escorts through Monday, January 27, 2025.

Any questions regarding oversize/overweight permits and escorts may be directed to DOTD’s truck permits office at 800-654-1433 during business hours. Motorists may also use the LaGeaux permit system at this link.

Motorists should be aware that many state highways are still closed due to the winter storm. For the most up-to-date road status information, DOTD offers motorists various resources:
  • 511 Traveler Information: Travelers can find information regarding road closures by downloading the Louisiana 511 mobile app or by visiting the 511 Traveler Information website at www.511la.org. This website offers updates in real time, along with access to our live-stream traffic cameras.
