BATON ROUGE, LA – Today, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced that it opened price proposals for the proposed U.S. 90 at La. 318 interchange design-build project, in St. Mary Parish. This project would allow for the continued upgrade of U.S. 90, future I-49 South corridor, to interstate standards.

Four design-builders price proposals for this project were considered. Based on a previously evaluated technical score, now coupled today with their proposed price and number of days, Gilchrist Construction has the lowest adjusted score subject to verification that all terms and conditions have been met.

“We’re delighted to make this announcement regarding the next phase for the Geaux South program,” said Secretary LeBas. “The completion of I-49 South remains a priority for the state and this project is another example of our strong commitment to I-49 South’s overall completion."

The proposed project includes upgrading the existing U.S. 90 and La. 318 signalized intersection to a full control of access, grade-separated interchange including the reconstruction of the U.S. 90 frontage roads to provide local access to La. 318. As part of the plan, the project would improve connectivity for industrial and freight transport to the sugar mill and port-related industries, as well as increase capacity and improve overall mobility.

The $56 million project will be funded by a combination of federal and state funds. The contract is expected to be executed in June 2015 and completed in just over two years.

The design-build project delivery method allows for design and construction under a single contract.

Today’s announcement will make this project the third project that has been pursued using the design-build method under the Geaux South program, a $3 billion program dedicated to upgrading U.S. 90 to interstate standards.

Currently, a $57.1 million design-build project is underway in Lafayette Parish. This project will widen U.S. 90 along the U.S. 90/I-49 South corridor from north of Ambassador Caffery Parkway to Albertson’s Parkway in Lafayette Parish. Construction for this project began in August 2014 and is estimated for completion in summer 2017.
