DOTD announces upcoming traffic shift on I-20 in Delhi

BATON ROUGE, La. – Today, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced that westbound traffic on I-20 in Delhi will be shifted to the eastbound side for approximately one month beginning in early January.

Beginning Friday, Nov. 21, crews will begin shoulder work in preparation for constructing temporary crossovers for the traffic shift. Work to begin constructing the temporary crossovers will begin Monday, Dec. 1 and will require lane closures.

The January lane shift is related to a well workover operation being conducted by Denbury Resources. This will allow rig crews to work in the median west of the Delhi overpass in Richland Parish to assess an oil well that was originally plugged in the early 1950s by a different oil and gas company and prior to construction of the interstate. The well will now be re-plugged to modern standards.

Denbury has been conducting operations in the Delhi Field, located further west, to return portions of this field to production, and while the company will not be attempting to produce from the area near the interstate, Denbury is using modern plugging methods on older wells near the roadway to meet the state’s safety standards.

During the operation, westbound traffic will cross over to the eastbound lanes just east of the Delhi interchange and cross back to the westbound lanes just west of the interchange.

Drivers should expect delays on I-20 during this time. DOTD advises drivers to take alternate routes, if possible.
