Traffic shift planned for U.S. 90 in Broussard

BROUSSARD, LA – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces that work will begin Monday, September 8, to shift U.S. 90 southbound traffic, between Celebrity Drive and Albertson Parkway, to the recently constructed temporary lanes in the median of the highway. The traffic shift will require approximately three days to implement. During this time drivers will encounter intermittent lane closures in the U.S. 90 work zone between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Following the traffic shift, two U.S. 90 southbound lanes will be available but lane widths will be reduced to 11 feet. Oversized loads will not be permitted to pass through the work zone and should use alternate routes that include LA 89, LA 182, LA 352 and LA 31. Emergency vehicles will continue to have access to the area.
As part of DOTD’s Geaux South construction program, this $57.1 million effort will widen U.S 90 to six-lanes from Albertson Parkway to north of the Ambassador Caffery intersection. The project will also include construction of a U.S. 90 overpass above Albertson Parkway, a new railroad overpass, and modification of the adjacent frontage roads. Work on the project is slated for completion in mid-2017.
The Geaux South program is a $3 billion multi-year construction initiative that will convert approximately 160 miles of the current U.S. 90 corridor to Interstate 49 South. When completed, I-49 will extend from the current terminus at I-10 in Lafayette to the West Bank Expressway in New Orleans.
The construction work will enhance safety, facilitate economic growth, reduce traffic congestion, and improve mobility throughout the state’s transportation system. In addition, the program will benefit public safety by allowing local governments to more efficiently evacuate residents in the event of a hurricane or other natural disaster.
