DOTD puts restrictions in place for commercial motor vehicles traveling I-12 between Walker and Tangipahoa Parish line

Baton Rouge, LA – Today, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced that commercial motor vehicles traveling through the construction zones on I-12 between Walker and the Tangipahoa Parish line must use the right lane only.

The restriction has been put in place to help reduce the number of incidents occurring on this section of I-12 while construction is underway.

Signs have been erected along this section of I-12 notifying drivers of the lane restriction, which begins immediately. DOTD urges motorists to drive cautiously through these areas and always be on the lookout for workers and equipment.

There are four active construction zones in this area. Work includes a $26.5 million project to widen I-12 from four to six lanes in each direction from Walker to half a mile west of Satsuma, and a $17.9 million project to repair and widen numerous bridges. Work on both projects is scheduled to finish by early spring 2015.

Travelers can access up-to-date information about weather-related road conditions, construction activities and other critical incidents by dialing 511 from their telephone. The voice-activated 511 Traveler Information System is available to most wireless and landline telephone users. Out-of-state travelers can access the system by calling 1-888-ROAD-511 (1-888-762-3511). Travelers can also access this information by visiting the 511 Traveler Information System Web site at www.511la.org.

Additionally, motorists can utilize the new “Way to Geaux” application to receive real-time, around the clock travel alerts. The hands-free, eyes-free smartphone application can be downloaded on any iPhone or Android device by visiting either the iTunes App Store, or Google Play.
