DOTD announces completion of frontage road project in New Iberia as part of I-49 South project

NEW IBERIA, La. – Today, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced the completion of a $5.8 million project that constructed frontage roads along a 2.97-mile section of U.S. 90, future I-49 South, between Darnall Road and La. 85 in Iberia Parish.
The construction of frontage roads along U.S. 90 is the preliminary steps in the construction of the I-49 Extension between Lafayette and New Orleans. As such, the construction of frontage road projects will have a significant impact on a large part of the state.
DOTD Secretary Sherri H. LeBas said, “The construction of frontage roads along the U.S. 90 corridor are such an integral component and really help in bringing us closer to our ultimate goal of completing the I-49 South project.”
To date, approximately $210 million has been dedicated to I-49 South. Of that funding, the Jindal administration has invested approximately $140.9 million toward its completion.
The total future I-49 South corridor includes approximately 160 miles of roadway, of which more than 100 miles have been completed or are currently under construction. The state is committed to continuing to move forward with its efforts for the completion of this vital corridor.
The I-49 South project will convert U.S. 90 from Lafayette to New Orleans into an interstate-quality roadway, ultimately providing improved travel throughout the state and nation.
Awarded to Gilchrist Construction, work on the frontage road project began in August 2012 and was completed in April 2014.
