DOTD hosts Job Shadowing Day for Scotlandville Magnet High School students
Agency employees donate $429 to school’s engineering program
BATON ROUGE, La. – Employees of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) hosted the 2010 Job Shadowing Day for students of Scotlandville Magnet High School on Feb. 2, 2009.
During this event, seven students from Scotlandville Magnet were paired with DOTD engineers and engineer technicians. The day began with a tour of the department’s Intelligent Transportation Systems office. This was followed by "job shadowing," when each student accompanied a mentor to his or her workstation.
The student/mentor relationships do not end with Job Shadowing Day. Some students in the Scotlandville Mentoring Program, mostly those interested in engineering, have periodic meetings with their mentors.
Also during the 2010 Job Shadowing Day, DOTD presented a check for more than $429 to the school’s engineering program. On behalf of the DOTD employees, DOTD’s Deputy Secretary Sherri LeBas presented the check to Scotlandville Magnet Principal Dr. Derek Morgan.
"DOTD offers a career path for a variety of fields, such as engineering, accounting, information technology, human resources and surveying," LeBas said. "And I hope your interest has been peaked by some of the things you have seen here today."
"I am thankful to be here today and to have the opportunity to see our students engaged and enriched in this program," Morgan said. "This program is important because it helps to align students with opportunities that will help them further their careers. Thank you, DOTD, for making this possible and for your generous donation."
The money represents 10 percent of the proceeds from two "Books Are Fun" book sales held at DOTD headquarters in 2009 – a one-day sale during the summer and a two-day sale held before Christmas.
