Causeway Blvd. Interchange
Project Update

February 1, 2009

Work began on Phase 1 of the new interchange on April 6, 2009 and will be complete in Winter 2010.  Phase 2 began November 11, 2009 and will be complete in Summer 2012.

Crews continue constructing concrete footings, columns, and decks for the new North Causeway Boulevard to I-10 west on-ramp. Also, work continues on the new I-10 West to North Causeway exit ramp including driving piles, constructing concrete foundations.

Along the ground-level portion of North Causeway Boulevard, construction of the right side of the new concrete roadway is complete including the adjacent sidewalks and driveways. Traffic shifts to the new lane while the new bridge is constructed over the existing left lane.

Crews continue in the northwest quadrant of the interchange on the new I-10 West off-ramp to Southbound Causeway – the I-10 West on-ramps from Southbound Causeway and Veterans.

CURRENT LANE AND RAMP CLOSURES

Ground level Northbound Causeway reduced to one lane.  This will last for several months as the bridge is constructed over the left lane.  Motorist should expect delays heavier than currently experienced.

Alternate route for Westbound I-10: Exit at Bonnabel to West Esplanade to Causeway.

Alternate Route for Westbound Veterans: Instead of continuing on Causeway through Veterans, turn right onto eastbound Veterans and U-turn to go west.

The u-turn, south of Veterans, leading to Southbound Causeway will also be closed.  Motorists headed to the I-10 service road should exit at Clearview.

The North Causeway exit to Veterans Boulevard exit remains closed. North Causeway traffic is re-directed over Veterans where they u-turn to return on South Causeway to Veterans. Additionally, I-10 westbound to North Causeway traffic is redirected to ground level Causeway and re-enter Causeway north of Veterans.

Mardi Gras

During Mardi Gras parades on Veterans, I-10 West traffic headed to North Causeway will be directed onto the overpass using a temporary opening through the work. Once the parade is complete and Veterans is open, the connection to the overpass will close.

The limited space, the vast size of the construction equipment, and the high traffic volumes on North Causeway prohibit keeping the exit open during working hours.

Traffic on Northbound Causeway should be prepared to stop as police officers may periodically stop the Northbound Causeway right lane to allow I-10 traffic to safely enter Causeway and to prevent traffic from backing-up on I-10 West.

The exit is scheduled to open in late March at which time I-10 West traffic headed to North Causeway will once again use the overpass and the exit to Veterans will be opened.

Motorists should expect delays, and we ask that you proceed through the project with caution. Be on the lookout for flaggers and construction traffic entering and exiting the highway, side streets and driveways.

Traffic entering and exiting some streets, driveways, businesses and subdivisions will be temporarily inconvenienced while construction continues. If your business or residence has two entrances/exits, one entrance/exit may be closed temporarily during construction operations, but the other entrance will remain open allowing access to your business or residence. If your business has one entrance/exit, we will maintain traffic in and out of the business or residence while crews work across the driveway.

All above mentioned work schedules are subject to change due to adverse weather. Please see public notices for exact times, dates and cancellations.
