IBERIA PARISH, La. - Today, DOTD announced the completion of a maintenance asphalt overlay project on La. 83 (Weeks Island Road). The in-house maintenance project involved resurfacing La. 83 from Darnall Road to Morton Road in New Iberia.
However, a one-mile section of La. 83, approximately a half-mile on each side of the Bayou Patout Bridge, was not included in this maintenance work. Due to the amount of differential settlement, this requires more than just an overlay by DOTD maintenance crews.
DOTD is currently designing a project to repair this section, which will include the following:
- Removing the existing pavement in this area
- Rebuilding the roadway base with the addition of geosynthetic reinforcement layers
- Installing new asphalt pavement with a new profile grade
- Modification to bridge approach slabs
The scope of this work will require the Department to outsource this work to a heavy-civil contractor, which is currently expected to let out for bid in fall 2025.
Until such time that the additional repairs are performed on this section, DOTD urges motorist to be mindful of the reduced speed advisory and bump signs, and to continue to use caution in this area.
In addition to this work, DOTD announces plans to rehabilitate another section of La. 83, from Darnall Road past the Port of Iberia to U.S. 90. Construction is expected to begin on this section of La. 83 in fall 2025. DOTD does plan to continue with maintenance asphalt overlays on La. 83 and La. 319 south of the recently resurfaced section as funds are available.
