ASCENSION PARISH, La- The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces an update on the LA 70 Widening Project in Ascension Parish. As of now, all embankment and subgrade installations have been installed. The project has also seen substantial progress with the laying of asphalt binder, which extends from the Sunshine Bridge project start to LA 3125, along with approximately one mile of asphalt laid 2,000 feet east of LA 3125. Asphalt binder is the second to last layer of asphalt that is placed on the roadway. Additionally, two major drainage structures are currently being installed just east of LA 3125 under the new LA 70 roadway, with the bridge for the new roadway already completed. Construction on the roundabout at LA 3125 has begun, which will improve traffic flow in the area once complete.
Following the installation of the two drainage structures, the contractor will proceed with paving the 2000-foot section. Work will continue on paving the remaining project area with asphalt binder. Once the asphalt is laid, traffic will shift to the new road, allowing for the construction of bulb-outs on the old road. The roundabout construction will continue during this phase, with traffic configurations set to their final layout, including wearing pavement on both the new and existing roads. The wearing pavement is the final layer of asphalt. The project will conclude with the installation of rumple strips, striping, and other miscellaneous elements.
The original bid for the LA 70 widening project was $50 million, with an estimated completion date in late 2025 to early 2026.
