U.S. 90 Lafayette J-turn Project Update

6-12-12

Construction:

The U.S. 90 J-turn project will install J-turns, as part of the U.S. 90 widening project, from Pinhook to Broussard in Lafayette parish. Construction began on the J-turns in March 2012. These safety measures, known as J-turns, will be constructed along U.S. 90 between Pinhook Road and Albertson’s Parkway. The J-turn design will safely and efficiently manage traffic and eliminate left-turn and through movements from side roads and driveways into crossovers. All vehicles will be forced to turn right and then U-turn in a protected turn lane at a median opening. The U.S. 90 J-turn project is part of the larger capacity project that will widen U.S. 90 from four lanes to six lanes from Pinhook Road to Broussard.  Approximately 50,000 drivers a day travel on this portion of U.S. 90. Work on this 7.19-mile project began in late April 2010 and should be completed by fall 2012.

J-turns will be installed at the following locations:

U.S. 90 at Albertson’s Pkwy/St. Nazaire Rd.

U.S. 90 at University/Surrey

U.S. 90 at Morgan

U.S. 90 at Verot School Rd.

U.S. 90 at Southpark

U.S. 90 at Kaliste Saloom Rd.

U.S. 90 at Pinhook

Signalized J-Turns:

Signalized J-turns will be located at University and Morgan Avenue.  A signalized J-turn is more efficient than a traffic signal because a J-turn signal gives much more green light time to the higher speed main roads. With the use of a traffic signal the amount of green light time is 40 percent while the amount of green light time when using a signalized J-turn increases to 70-80 percent.  This reduces congestion on the main line, but also provides a safer turning environment for the side streets. Installation of a signalized J-turn reduces rear-end and side exposure for turning vehicles. The less the main road is stopped the less possibility there is for high speed rear-end collisions.

Traffic:

Inside lanes are closed to traffic while the contractor constructs J-turns. There are no traffic delays. Two lanes of traffic are being maintained for the duration of the project.

All above-mentioned work schedules are subject to change in the event of adverse weather. Please see public notices for exact times, dates and cancellations.
