BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) today announced additional safety improvements will be implemented on La. 935 in response to a Road Safety Assessment (RSA) the department completed last month.
The safety improvements include placing reflective tape on curve warning sign posts, installing centerline rumble strips and centerline raised pavement markers, and restriping the edge-lines of the roadway with reflective thermoplastic striping. DOTD’s district traffic office will also conduct a speed study to ensure the posted speed limit is adequate for the roadway.
Work to implement the improvements will be complete within the next year. The improvements are in addition to new warning signs installed in March to alert drivers about curves in the area.
"DOTD’s number one priority is the safety of drivers on Louisiana’s roadways," said DOTD Secretary Sherri H. LeBas. "These improvements, in addition to the enhancements already made, will help to increase safety for drivers using this roadway each day."
DOTD initiated the RSA program in 2010 to identify safety measures that can be made to roads in the state highway system. This approach gathers input from local officials and legislators, local and state police, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and DOTD personnel to determine any existing safety-related needs along a specific route and identify opportunities for low-cost improvements to address those needs.
Examples of low-cost safety enhancements include center-line rumble strips, signal timing adjustments, enhanced signage, enhanced striping, widening of curves, shoulder widening, and raised pavement markers.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is committed to delivering transportation and public works systems that enhance the quality of life. In addition to more than 16,600 miles of roadway, including over 890 miles of interstate, DOTD supports the development of the state’s aviation, marine and rail infrastructures. Through this work, we are able to facilitate economic development, create job opportunities, improve vital evacuation routes, and make critical freight corridors safer and more efficient.
