Jefferson Parish- The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces that the temporary Acrow bridge along LA 302 in Jean Lafitte is now open for vehicular traffic.
During Hurricane Ida, the Kerner Bridge over Bayou Barataria was damaged due to a vessel collision that occurred when barges broke loose, causing significant damage to the main truss and approach spans. The Louisiana National Guard built an emergency temporary floating bridge to allow access across the bayou while crews removed the damaged bridge and assembled the Acrow bridge.

“This long-term temporary structure allows the National Guard to demobilize their military bridge they constructed on September 8,” said DOTD Secretary Shawn D. Wilson, Ph.D. “This community was one of the hardest hit areas from Hurricane Ida and faces ongoing recovery efforts. The construction of this bridge will allow access across Bayou Barataria for residents in this coastal area as the departments continue to deliver a permanent movable bridge.”
“I applaud the Louisiana National Guard, the Governor, and DOTD for swiftly finding solutions to replace the Kerner bridge that was damaged during Hurricane Ida” said Senator Pat Connick. “Having this structure completed in a little over 30 days is a testament of what can be accomplished when everyone works together for the common good. I know the people of Barataria, Louisiana are grateful for everyone’s hard work.”
“No pun intended, but this bridges the gap until the permanent bridge can be constructed, said Representative Timothy Kerner. “Providing this temporary solution to the citizens of this community was a must, while we continue to recover.”
“Our community suffered a major blow from Hurricane Ida”, said Mayor Tim Kerner. “While we look forward to a new permanent structure, we are grateful to have this temporary acrow bridge that will keep our community connected.”
The $4 million emergency contract was awarded to CEC Construction. Crews began the work of removing the damaged bridge components and assembling the temporary Acrow bridge on September 5th and were able to open it to traffic on October 7, a week ahead of schedule.
