LULING, La. – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is set to close the Hale Boggs (Luling) Bridge this weekend to move equipment from atop the first tower to the second tower, continuing a $30.5 million unprecedented cable replacement project.

The closure will last a total of 54 continuous hours, starting Friday, March 18 at 10 p.m., with an anticipated reopening scheduled for 4 a.m., Monday, March 21.

Before work can begin on the second tower, construction crews must move heavy equipment, requiring the setup of a large crane. Because of the size and weight of the crane, it was necessary to restrict traffic and loads while it is in operation. Motorists may detour via the Huey P. Long Bridge (US 90) or the Mississippi River Bridge in Gramercy (LA 3213).

To date, the first 18 support cables of the down river and east bank span have been replaced on the first tower. Contractor Kiewet Construction, LLC will continue work down river, on the second tower, replacing the next 18 cables. The project calls for a total of 72 support cables to be replaced in an effort to extend the life of the structure, which was erected in 1983.
