Temporary schedule for Plaquemine ferry

Baton Rouge - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is announcing an updated, temporary schedule for the Plaquemine ferry. The second Plaquemine ferry will be out of service for approximately eight weeks beginning today, December 11. This is because of ferry staffing issues related to COVID quarantines in Plaquemine, as well as the need for ferry service after the complete outage of the Cameron ferry because of the recent storms in southwest Louisiana. To best serve the traveling public of the state as a whole with the department’s currently limited resources, the second Plaquemine ferry will be moved to Cameron while their current vessel is being repaired.

Due to COVID quarantines, the department doesn’t have enough staff to meet the Coast Guard regulations to run the remaining Plaquemine ferry on its usual schedule. Because of this personnel shortage, the remaining Plaquemine ferry will be shut down during non-peak hours.

The temporary schedule will be as follows:
  • Monday - Friday from 4:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.; re-opens from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday - Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.

DOTD appreciates your patience during this time. Motorists are encouraged to check the status of road conditions statewide prior to beginning commutes by visiting the 511 Traveler Information website at www.511la.org or by dialing 511 from their telephone and saying the route or region about which they are seeking information. Out-of-state travelers can access the system by calling 1-888-ROAD-511 (1-888-762-3511).
