UPDATE: DOTD advises the Cameron Ferry is scheduled for dry dock – Cameron Parish
UPDATE: The dry dock extension has been approved by the USCG. The Cameron Ferry will NOT suspend service on Monday, March 31. The new date for the dry dock is midnight, April 30, 2020. This extension allows DOTD to continue its efforts to secure a relief ferry. More information on a relief ferry will be announced as it becomes available.
The Department of Transportation and Development advises motorists the Cameron Ferry is scheduled to suspend operation in preparation for its United States Coast Guard (USCG) mandated dry dock at midnight, March 31, 2020. The ferry will be out of service from that point on and is expected to be in dry dock until the Fall of 2021.
DOTD is actively working to secure a relief ferry for motorists to cross the ship channel during the scheduled downtime. DOTD submitted a dry dock extension request to the USCG to postpone the dry dock start time until a relief ferry is secured. The request is currently awaiting USCG approval. A notification will be issued if the date for the dry dock is postponed, and when a relief ferry will be made available.
The dry dock will allow the Cameron Ferry to receive several upgrades. The ferry will be equipped with new main engines, marine transmissions, drives and the necessary equipment for those systems.
