Work progressing on Vernon Lake spillway repair project, Vernon Parish

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises the public that work is progressing – and nearing completion – on the Vernon Lake dam and spillway repair project in Vernon Parish.

The earthen dam, spillway approach channel, and spillway were damaged during the Hurricane Harvey event, and a repair project began in Spring 2019 to address the damages.

So far, the contractor has completed all of the earthen dam repairs, the spillway approach channel repairs and most of the spillway patching.

DOTD initiated the process of allowing the lake to refill by closing the management gate several months ago. Last week DOTD slowed the rate of rise of the water level in the lake by slightly opening the management gate to ensure the last few items of work within the spillway can be completed.

It is anticipated the work may be completed within the next 2 weeks, weather permitting, at which time the management gate will be completely closed again, allowing the lake to refill at the maximum rate nature allows.

We appreciate the public’s patience as this project nears completion in the coming weeks.
